My friends, Jonathan Wright and Sarah Whetstone commissioned me to make this print for our other friends', Christopher Bennett and Kayla Severt's wedding. They gave me a list of items: belly dancers, horses, dogs, guitars, a poem called "the fly has married the bee", and the grand canyon and this is what I came up with. Kayla apparently cried when they gave it to her - so flattering! congrats everyone, you're beautiful!

In addition, the art work I was commissioned to do for this year's Chicago Underground Film Festival is all over the Reader and the city - opening night is tonight at the Gene Siskel Film Center where they have given me a wall to display my work!

My good friend and vocalist of the now-defunct Planes Mistaken For Stars, Gared O'Donnell, approached me about doing a poster for their upcoming reunion show. He brought an ink-pen sketch which I turned into a 4 color (2 split fountain) poster with a limited edition of 25 glow-in-dark versions which will be sold at the show here in Chicago on October 28! The image is based on Planes' original logo with a small drawing of a bat which was used in some of the band members' former group, Peralta. The show will also feature some of our good friends, Swan King, Big Science, and newcomers to America from Norway, Wolves Like Us.

Once upon a time, I worked in an amazing local restaurant here in Chicago called Uncommon Ground. Uncommon Ground began as a one-room coffee house and has now expanded into a 3 room full service bar, restaurant, and small acoustic venue which focuses on organic and locally/independently produced goods. The owners, Helen and Mike Cameron, have been amazing and have continued to support me and to hire me since I went out on my own as a freelance artist. One room is reserved for mainly acoustic singer-songwriter performances and some greats have played there while they were coming up such as Wilco, Cory Branan and Jeff Buckley - whose performance was deemed one of the greatest that year (1994). In the past few years, I have done 2 different posters for this event, which Buckley's mother attends. My great former bosses have hired me again this year to do a new design and I have some great ideas in the works!

I recently was asked to participate in a design event for the LP covers for a Germany-based artist, Amos and his new album, "Showtime". Different artists were asked to design unique LP covers which will be sold in Galleries across Europe.
Mine is a 3-color silk-screen made from 2 collaged photos with hand-coloring and applique.

It will be featured in a gallery called Parzelle403 in Basel, Switzerland

October 9, I will have posters hung in a show in New York at Empire State Studios - located at 222 Merrick Road, Oceanside, New York

Then, October 23, my good friends at Revolution Tattoo have asked me to contribute several brand new art prints for a show called Heavy Metal Harvest, sponsored by 3 Floyds Brewing Company! There will be a metal DJ, beer and snacks, and a costume contest for a $100 tattoo gift certificate!

I am involved in this year's Printer's Ball in Chicago where artists were paired with poets to create a piece based on the poem - my poet, John Bresland - and it was a perfect pairing!

I have also curated a poster show at my old place of employment, Uncommon Ground - it has an excellent line-up of established and fresh artists and opens with a big celebration on 7/22!

First off, I want to congratulate my friend and fellow artist, Kathleen Judge, for her nomination for a grammy for the art work she did for Neko Case's record, 'Middle Cyclone'. Judge is an amazing artist and a great person - I also want to thank her for her input into the poster that this blog is about!

So, here is my process post for the Black Cobra poster I did via the band and Secret Serpents.
I began by drawing the image on clayboard
I always do everything by hand, including the separations
The first color was a white to red split for the body and the dress of the figure which was done with rubylith

I tried something new for the next two steps. I decided to try to paint onto mylar plastic film, which we use for registration at the shop, with acrylic paint and a horsehair flat brush to create waves. The results were amazing! I was able to burn the screen using the painted transparency and the detail with the brush strokes is gorgeous - I printed it with a gold - golden orange split

I repeated this process with another set of waves using a metallic teal to a silver split.

The gold in the hair and the dress of the figure was hand-drawn onto tracing paper and burned directly onto a screen

Finally, the line-work was printed in a dark red to finish it off. A beautiful poster if I don't say myself!

One of the bands I have had the grace to do some work for, Maserati, has suffered a great loss. I am very sad to say that their drummer and former drummer of !!!, Jerry Fuchs, died in a tragic freak accident while trying to escape a broken freight elevator at a fundraising event.
I didn't get the chance to know him as well as many, but his overwhelming support and appreciation of me as a fellow artist is something that I will not forget.
My heart goes out to all of his friends, family, and fans.

Jeff Buckley Tribute Concert in progress

My former employer, Uncommon Ground, and my very supportive bosses there, Helen and Michael Cameron, gave me my first paid poster job for their annual Jeff Buckley Tribute Concert series. Jeff played one of his most critically acclaimed live performances at our little establishment which has since grown into a huge full-service, primarily local and primarily green-centered restaurant with a coffee bar and a music room featuring local and touring artists every night of the week. Every year, Michael and Helen host a tribute concert that Jeff's mother usually attends and I was extremely flattered to have her personally thank and compliment me on the poster that I did in the past. This year, I am once again doing the poster. Here is the line work made from a combination of ink brushwork on clayboard.

Currently, my work has been inspired by many disparate ideas - some of them are vintage/victorian Halloween imagery, childhood memories mized with sobering adulthood realities, and ritualistic imagery rooted in voodoo, santeria, and Aztec rites.
